Drug Addiction Treatment

Drug addiction treatment varies depending on the drug addiction that is being treated, however all drug addiction treatments aim to result in long-term abstinence from harmful, addictive substances. Because each individual is different drug addiction treatment must cater to the problems associated with each individual. Although there are stereotypes that characterize the "typical" drug addict, in reality there is no typical drug addict. The severity of drug addiction can vary as well as the drug of choice for each individual.

In most drug addiction treatment programs, the initial step upon arrival is a medical detox used to cleanse the physical body of addictive substances. Medical specialists then work with the client to create a treatment plan that deals with his/her specific issues. Drug addiction treatment can take place at hospitals, mental institutions, and rehabilitation centers, and while all are effective, rehabs and treatment centers often provide the most comprehensive drug addiction treatment approaches.

Because there has been no proven "cure" for addiction, complete abstinence is the only solution, and within the scope of drug addiction treatment clients must learn how to deal with triggers, cravings, irrational thoughts and interventions for their addictive behavior. Long-term drug addiction can lead to mental disorders and other problems such as infectious disease (i.e. HIV/AIDS and hepatitis) therefore treatment programs must take these things into account.

Once a person has undergone a medical detox, drug addiction treatment plans can include monitored medication, individual therapy, support groups and therapeutic work. Outpatient, residential inpatient, sober livings, and therapeutic communities are all types of effective drug addiction treatment programs available. Some people choose outpatient as a means for convenience but many drug addicts find that it is hard to function in everyday life while recovering from their addictions. Instead they see inpatient treatment more effective because they are able to focus all of their energy on recovery instead of having to worry about other areas of their lives.

Drug addiction treatment plans that include extracurricular activities or focus on the wellness of a person are also very successful. By finding fun activities and support groups they enjoy, drug addicts are able to incorporate new passions into their life after treatment. This is beneficial because it keeps the drug addict's mind busy and away from thoughts of using drugs or alcohol.
